Blackformat is an illustration, design and animation magazine and community, it's a community I'm super happy to be a part of and am very involved in. Blackformat hold a monthly design challenge open to all 200+ members, the challenge is based around a specific theme and the entries are then voted on within the group. I created this for the April 2016 challenge, theme: exploration.

This is a style I have been excited to experiment with for a while now and thought this theme was a perfect fit and a great opportunity to challenge myself and try something new. I wanted to capture that feeling of being outdoors and embracing the natural beauty that is all around us. After some initial doodles I knew I wanted to base the design around the 3 key building blocks of planet earth - land, sea and space.

I initially sketched out a variety of ideas for the various areas of the design before I took to Illustrator and selected the trusty pen tool. I then selected which of those parts fit in best with the overall feel and composition of the design. After some invaluable feedback from the Blackformat community I made some tweaks and put the final touches together. I'm pleased to say my design won the vote for this month!

I later decided to submit this to designer t-shirt community Cotton Bureau which I'm happy to say they accepted. My design was featured in their weekly newsletter and is available to purchase right now, here in three delicious colour combinations! Grab one now before it's gone!
